The Jim Mora Count On Me Family Foundation create “Sacks for Kids,” an ongoing community outreach program in partnership with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spaulding.

While on a visit to Hughes Spaulding, Count On Me Foundation Vice President Shannon Mora noticed that the children were leaving the hospital with paper bags after treatment and hospital stays.  To support the patients through this difficult time, the Jim Mora Count On Me Family Foundation teamed up with Verizon Wireless to lend a helping hand at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spaulding, providing over 2500 backpack sacks to the hospital to give to patients to take home their belongings and medications that are home-bound.

“We deliver the bags to the inpatient unit on a daily basis,” said Sondra Brooks, Manager of Community Outreach at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding.    “The kids absolutely adore them (so do the parents)!  It is very exciting to see them leave the hospital with their belongings in the bag with them neatly secured to their back.  Now they have a great reminder of their stay at the hospital.”

Thanks to Verizon Wireless for their support with the Jim Mora Count On Me Family Foundation’s Sacks for Kids Program at the Hughes Spaulding.

The Jim Mora Count On Me Family Foundation was proud to work with Make-A-Wish of Georgia and Alabama to grant (2) wishes for Make-A-Wish children in 2006.  The Foundation was fortunate to host one of the wishes at a game in December.   Bryant, a Make-A-Wish recipient, was Coach Mora’s special guest at the Falcons’ game on December 24.  Bryant’s wish was to meet Michael Vick and Coach Mora.   Bryant and friends were invited out to the Falcons Practice Facility December 23rd – to watch the morning run through, take a tour of the facility and meet the players.  Coach and Shannon Mora surprised Bryant with gifts off his Christmas list --- an IPOD, a 2007 Madden NFL game for PlayStation 2, and a Falcons football helmet, autographed by Michael Vick.  On Dec. 24th, Bryant was invited out to the game--- his first official game-- to hang out on the sidelines pregame and meet his favorite player, Michael Vick.

2006 Turkey Bowl—Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta

The 2006 Jim Mora Turkey Bowl was in full swing with whistles blaring and players battling it out for the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta Flag Football championship title of the season. Boys and girls ranging in age from 6 to 18 came from various Boys and Girls Clubs around Atlanta to participate in the winner-take-all tournament in its fourth consecutive year. Each player, proudly displaying their team jersey, went through an intense eight week flag-football program at their respective clubs to make it to this “Bowl” game. One of the participants, 14 year-old Darrin C. of the Newnan Boys and Girls Club,  recalls his experience in this year’s flag football program, “I never thought I could learn so much about teamwork,” said Darrin.  “ Playing football with my friends showed me how productive we can be when we just work together.” The games were played on the regulation size field displaying the NFL logo at the YET center in Metro Atlanta. Whether or not they walked away with a trophy later that day, the kids were more than happy to be there.

"Shannon and I are humbled to be recipients of the Hometown Heroes Award," said Mora. "Giving back is very important to me and my entire family. We are in a position to help those less fortunate than we are and we want to do everything we can to make someone's else's life a littler better."

The Moras recently decided to launch their own Foundation.  The Jim Mora Count on Me Family Foundation primarily targets three areas: children from low socio-economic backgrounds, mentally and physically challenged children, and children "at-risk", as well as those who lack stability or support in their lives.

"Shannon, myself, and our family, through my work, have been afforded opportunities for many special experiences," Mora said. "We want to give others those same opportunities and reach young people here in Atlanta. We have been blessed as a family, and we want to be a blessing for others."

Also honored at Thursday's event are: Walter Banks, Atlanta Braves Icon; Furman Bisher, Legendary AJC Sportswriter; Claire Guitton, Boys & Girls Clubs Staff Hero of the Year; and Delta Air Lines, recipient of the Corporate Leader Award.
